Once again, we bear witness to another tragic school shooting! On Monday, March 5, 2001, Charles "Andy" Williams, a "smiling," unassuming, diminutive student opened fire killing two youths and wounding thirteen other people at the suburban San Diego county Santana High School in Santee, California.

The student had threatened and warned friends over the weekend that he would carry out a shooting at the school. Suddenly, it was Columbine all over again.

Another favorite view of the gun control, public health establishment is the myth propounded by Dr. Mark Rosenberg, former head of the NCIPC of the CDC, who has written: "Most of the perpetrators of violence are not criminals by trade or profession. Indeed, in the area of domestic violence, most of the perpetrators are never accused of any crime. The victims and perpetrators are ourselves - ordinary citizens, students, professionals, and even public health workers."(6) That statement is contradicted by available data, government data.

Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is using the ghastly acts of madmen or fanatic terrorists, this time a cowardly sniper, to call for further gun control measures to disarm law-abiding Americans.

This time the false panacea is "ballistic fingerprinting," which, purportedly, would have "solved this crime after the first shooting."

Last August, the rugged Aussie survivalist whose real-life exploits inspired the "Crocodile Dundee" movies died in what then appeared to be a mysterious shootout with Australian police. A police sergeant was also killed in the incident.

Dennis Farney's "Why Two Doctors Still Value Their Guns, Knowing the Toll" (page one, Dec. 13) was a poignant piece of reporting. The shooting tragedy notwithstanding, Drs. Kelly and Borkon represent the naivete of many Americans who still believe the Second Amendment is about hunting. It's not. It's about the right to protect yourself and your family, and even more importantly -- preserving freedom.

A Failure of Communication in the Mental Health Arena

Evidence mounts that Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old disturbed individual accused of the attempted assassination of blue dog, conservative Democrat, U.S Representative Gabrielle Giffords; the cold-blooded killing of five other citizens, including an innocent 9-year-old student and a conservative judge; and the wounding of fourteen people — should have been under psychiatric treatment.
