Teri O'BrienNow that Vice President Joe “Stand Up Chuck” Biden has finally let people get some sleep at night by announcing that he will not be running for president after all, it’s pretty clear that the commie fossil who has gotten so much attention for the last several months will be the nominee. That’s sad news for Sen. Bernie Sanders, who no doubt thought that the big crowds he’s been drawing and Bill Maher’s endorsement, might win the day for him.

You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks, they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.

On Independence Day weekend California Governor Jerry Brown, with the stroke of a pen, created several million brand new criminals in the once-Golden State.  Before jumping on a plane for a European vacation, he signed six of the eleven gun control bills sent to him by the one-party lynch mob that California’s legislature has become.  All six laws will go into effect next year. They create new crimes that will be committed simply because of Governor Brown’s signature, not by any actual misdeeds of hapless Californians against person or property.

I find it helpful to look back occasionally at our progress in the culture war waged by organized medicine against gun owners.  The players change and language evolves, generally in an attempt to mask the gun-grabbers’ true intentions.  But one force for gun control has remained constant.  The American Medical Association (AMA) still wants to ban gun ownership by regular citizens, although it will still vigorously deny it, even as it moves toward its goal.

We can all feel it. With violent crime dominating the headlines, the pressure to blame gun owners is mounting. Everywhere we look, we see the familiar gun grabbers calling for “universal” background checks, a ban on semi-automatic rifles, and that old saw, restoring funding to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for “firearm research.”

Law-abiding gun owners should not become complacent because gun prohibitionist organizations, such as the Million Mom March and Handgun Control Inc., seem to be in retreat, if not scrambling and looking for cover. Other gun control groups, deceptively using more reasonable- and innocuous-sounding names such as Americans for Gun Safety (AGS), Women Against Gun Violence, and Doctors Against Handgun Injury, are stepping up to the plate to keep the pressure on the Second Amendment.

Although only an embarrassingly low 32 percent of American physicians are members of AMA, the organization claims to speak for all doctors.

If your doctor is among the majority of physicians who are not AMA members, perhaps he could give you a laundry list of reasons for a refusal to participate. They could range from nonsense bureaucracy to politics.

Faria: Another shooting, more gun control!

What’s wrong with this picture? I refer to the latest shooting, February 7, in which a 17-year-old man at a Monroeville Pennsylvania mall shot three people. The brief AP story was remarkably shallow and riddled with errors due to media bias. The story went on, "Pennsylvania native and ex-NFL quarterback Terrelle Pryor tweeted Saturday that he was at the mall, when the shooting occurred. Abstract — En la práctica de la medicina, el cirujano no puede garantizar el resultado porque pueden ocurrir complicaciones; lo mismo puede pasar con las armas de fuego, que pueden ser usadas indebidamente por personas que no deberían tenerlas. Los políticos no deben utilizar tragedias debido a tiroteos callejeros como pretexto para dictar leyes que restrinjan la libertad a los ciudadanos que respetan las leyes, son responsables y saben que la libertad va junto con sus derechos constitucionales y responsabilidades civiles.

Over the years, in both commentaries and letters to the editor in my local newspaper, I have noted the naïve expression of many letter writers and liberal pundits, who glossing over the Constitutional protections guaranteed by the 4th and 5th Amendments, opine, “If you don’t have anything to hide, then you don’t have anything to fear!” When the Soviet KGB needed culprits, their motto was “Show me the man and I will show you his crime.” In other words, charges can be brought against anyone, once the State has decided to trample on the rights of any targeted citizen.

Oedel wrong about Scalia's intent in gun decision by Randolph Eick

David Oedel is incorrect in his assertion (“A right to armed revolt?”, 1/27) that Justice Scalia’s opinion in D.C. vs. Heller limits the right to keep and bear arms to weapons “in common use at the time” the Second Amendment was ratified. In fact, in his decision Justice Scalia  characterizes such arguments as “bordering on the frivolous.”

Guns and Freedom: Part 3 — Civilian Disarmament and Tyranny

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then.

Guns and Freedom: Part 2 — Historical Vignettes on Civilian Disarmament

Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretence, raised in the United States.

The problem of sensationalization of gun crimes by the media, multiple shootings by deranged individuals, accidents with firearms, suicide rates, and children with guns are discussed.

The role of gun violence and street crime in the United States and the world is currently a subject of great debate among national and international organizations, including the United Nations. Because the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects the individual right of American citizens to own private firearms, availability of firearms is greater in the U.S. than the rest of the world, except perhaps in Israel and Switzerland.

Faria: A solution to the problem of burglaries and home invasions

Charles Richardson's informative column on Macon and Bibb County crime statistics points out that while aggravated assaults have declined in the city and county, residential burglaries are up 6% over last year. These burglaries are associated with drugs and violence. The reality is that police cannot be everywhere all the time to protect our homes. Roadblocks and visible police presence may deter crime briefly, but unless we turn society into a police state even those measures will not suffice. Citizens must take some responsibility for their own safety.

Abstract — The AMA Council on Scientific Affairs did not conduct a rigorous scientific evaluation before supporting a ban on assault weapons.  The Council appears to have unquestioningly accepted common misperceptions and even partisan misrepresentations regarding the nature and uses of assault weapons.  This article examines the pivotal issues and proposes a rational approach to gun control and more effectual measures to reduce violence in our society.
